SPA assessment

SPA assessment in Pembrokeshire

This weekend I’ve been running an SPA assessment, a climbing instructor award overseen by Mountain Training. I run these awards down in Pembrokeshire, one of THE best areas (in the world?!) for climbing…

My candidates on this weekends SPA assessment were Dylan and Damien. Our first day was spent at Newton Head, where the rain held off till just as we were getting back to the cars (thanks rain!), though we did get a little damp from sea spray – the swell was massive down there today! As well as the personal climbing side of the syllabus, we looked at using a crag with a group utilizing both top and bottom ropes.

After a morning at the Haverfordwest Climbing wall, we headed out to Wolfs Rocks, an inland crag in between Haverfordwest and Fishguard. This lovely little venue is really only used by local outdoor centers, and is a great bottom roping and group abseiling area, but also contains some quality lesser-known bouldering!

We looked at some bits of the syllabus we covered yesterday, and finished the last little bits we needed to look at. Both Dylan and Damien put in strong performances, and were good passes! Well done on your SPA assessment guys and enjoy using your award!

Bridgwater College

This week I’ve been working for Birdgwater College, on an outdoor activity week with their MOD engineering apprentices. Working with a great bunch of instructors co-ordinated by Gwilym from Wet and High Adventures. It’s great to get down to Dartmoor for some hill action, and this last week was my first one down there where I didn’t need to put a waterproof on all week! Bridgwater College sent us 30 apprentices, who were hear mainly to bond in the early stages of their course.

We had a 2 day walking exped, with an overnight wild camp. the weather was cool but dry, giving us great views across Dartmoor without being too hot. My group of 5 were great company and reveled in just being outside. A really enjoyable couple of days walking and camping.

Our next day with the Bridgwater College apprentices was at Haldon Forest, a Mountain Bike trail park. My small team put on loads of effort despite sore legs from the previous days, and we enjoyed an amazing day of weather on runs up to red difficulty…

Our final day of the week was up at Hound Tor, where the team climbed, scrambled, bouldered and abseiled till they were too tired to carry on! Lots of fears faced and a top effort by all!

A week away working wouldn’t be the same without a bit of afterwork play, and we managed to get out bouldering at Bone Hill and Hound Tor on a couple of evenings. Great to make the most of the last rays of summer! Its getting cold and judging by the amount of berries on the Rowan trees – I’d say its going to be a good (cold!) winter!

Coasteering and Climbing

With Pembrokeshire quieter now summer has passed, we have the cliffs and sea almost to ourselves, so we had a lovely week Climbing and Coasteering. We started the week with a small group of managers from Mears New Homes. They had been brought to us by Andy, of Fresh Tracks Consulting. Their ongoing development was the focus of the day, and Coasteering was the challenge. Big swell and low tide at St Nons, the group pushed their comfort limits, and we linked in several tasks and challenges to get the learning outcomes we were looking for. It was a top day, cheers guys! We wish you luck with your future training with Andy and that the business goes from strength to strength…

After the guys from Mears New Homes left, I spent the next day climbing in the sun with Andy. Having climbed together several times we decided to head to Penally, an area Andy had not been to before, as it would give us the best weather, quick acess and plenty of awesome routes! It didn’t disappoint, and was one of those days when everything was just perfect! So lucky to live and work in Pembrokeshire! Thus ended 2 days climbing and coasteering with Mears New Homes and Fresh Tracks Consulting…

After a quick sandwich it was off for an evening climbing with Joey out at St Davids Head, the weather was set, too warm if anything, and a top sunset followed by a morning swim out on the headland.. It felt like one of the last summer nights with Autumn rapidly approaching, so its really important to get out there and squeeze every last bit out of the day at the minute!

The next day I had the company of Joel and Paola, who were with me for an introduction to climbing outside. We spent some time looking at movement skills and transferring indoor skills to the real rock, before climbing loads of routes at Porth Clais. The tides and weather perfect, the place to ourselves… What more could we want!

To wrap up the week of climbing and coasteering in Pembrokeshire, we sort of combined the two activities… The tides were super high, the sea at its warmest – so we went deep water soloing at Lydstep… A top place, great routes (some pretty high!) and we had the place to ourselves – luxury!

New Routes

Pembrokeshire new routes

With the bird bans recently lifted, on my day off I was desperate to do some new routes and explore some unclimbed sections of cliffs that are off limits for much of the summer. I’d done handful of new routes at Pointz Castle last year, and new there was scope for loads more. Persuading Nik to come along with the temptation of some new routes we headed out to the crag, not far from the busy Newgale beach. I’d taken a swim underneath the crag last week with an eye on the lines and the access to them. It’s fairly hard to tell until you’re on it how solid the rock is going to be, much of the crags here appear far nicer than they really are..! After an airy ridge traverse to get to a abseil point, I started down the cliff, clearing the loose rock as I went. Of which there was lots! Once the abseil line was clear and safe Nik came to join me at our non tidal ledge. It was hard to tell from below what secrets the lines might be hiding, especially underneath all the lichen!

Of all the climbing disciplines, trad climbing is probably my favourite, with on-sight trad new routing being the pinnacle of that style. I love heading up in to the unknown, hoping the gear, the rock and your arms are all going to be adequate! It had a special appeal to it, beyond being the “first”, for me it’s exploring, problem solving, mastery of self, risk and mind control, and above all else, fun and rewarding!

The pick of the bunch was a steep crack line, preceded by an easy but unprotected slab. The crack itself was fairly solid, but you never quite trust the rock, or the layer of lichen, ready to spit you off at any minute… The line had some very marginal gear, but every so often there was that piece of gear that inspires you to keep pushing on. Spending a long while on a large foothold having a rest before the crux section, trying to figure out the sequence, the holds that would support your weight, the next gear placement and resting position – it all makes it so memorable.  Once commited you keep going and hope your mind has it all figured, and will tell youre body what to do, and that your body will be capable…

The top out was a testing section, the harder climbing done, but the last solid gear placement way below your feet, meaning a long fall should any one of the loose finishing jugs blow, which seems like a distinct possibility. Spread your weight, push don’t pull, place a bit of gear to boost confidence, but definitely DONT fall on it, give yourself a little taking to, and very gingerly, pull over the top. Take a moment to savour the views heading south to Newgale, then back to reality and the strong wind, ready to blow you back over the cliff… Take the time to find a good belay amongst all the loose rock at the top of the cliff, then sit, content at a job well done, as you belay the second up, taking all the gear out to leave no trace that you were ever there…

Play time in Pembrokeshire

After a long period of solid work, its been awesome to have the last week off. It’s given me the time to get out and explore on the bike, find new places to run, go climbing for myself catch up with life! Rather than go on too much about it, below are some pictures, from climbing in North Pembrokeshire, cycling over the Preseli’s and to St Brides bay and the usual Pembrokshire sunset..
