What is Trad Climbing?

Imagine a cliff where there is nothing but the natural rock, you have to find places to secure your metal wedges (wires) or other types of protection as you head upwards. Your belayer is attentatively paying out rope as you go, and you are protected by what you place in the rock and clip your rope to – but if you fall off whist you’re above your gear, you will fall past it – meaning you can potentially fall quite far. At the top you must build your own anchor to attach yourself to before then belaying your partner up, who then takes out the protection – leaving a blank canvass for the next climbers!

There’s quite a lot of different skills to learn to make all this happen in a safe and efficient way, but Trad Climbing is an amazing sport and could take you to some incredible places – come on a learn to trad climb course with us and find out all about it!
